Why Some People Put Their Top Sheet Upside Down

Putting a top sheet “upside down” may actually be the correct way to make a bed, especially when the sheet has a decorative or patterned side. Instead of placing the attractive side facing upward, turn it toward your body. Then fold the upper section back over the blanket or comforter near the pillows. This reveals the patterned side and creates the polished border often seen on professionally made hotel beds.

This simple trick helps explain why hotel beds often look so neatly arranged. The folded section near the pillows creates a clean decorative finish, allowing the attractive side of the sheet to become visible. Rather than being placed incorrectly, the sheet is positioned this way as part of the overall design.

There can also be a comfort benefit. Depending on the material, one side of a sheet may feel smoother or softer against your skin. Turning the finished side toward your body can therefore make the bed more comfortable. At the same time, the top sheet has an important practical purpose: it creates a washable barrier between your body and heavier bedding.

During the night, sweat, body oils, lotions, and shed skin cells can collect on the sheet. Washing the lighter top sheet is much easier than repeatedly washing a large comforter or duvet, making it a useful protective layer.

Of course, this trick does not matter for every sheet. If both sides look and feel identical, the direction makes little difference. Some people also prefer sleeping without a top sheet. But when a sheet has clearly different sides, placing the decorative side down and folding the top section back can improve comfort, protect heavier bedding, and give the bed a more polished appearance. What looks “upside down” may actually be the finishing touch.
