Why Some Trees Are Painted White and What It Means

Many people assume a tree with a white-painted trunk is decorative, but it actually serves an important purpose. The coating protects trees from **”sudden temperature swings in winter”**, when cold nights followed by warm, sunny days can cause the bark to split. This damage, known as **”sunscald,”** is especially common on young, thin, and fruit-bearing trees.

To reduce this risk, gardeners and orchard owners paint the lower trunk with a light-colored, water-based latex paint that reflects sunlight and keeps the bark from overheating. Many dilute the paint with water, often using equal parts of each, to create the proper consistency. Some also mix in joint compound, which adds extra protection and may help discourage insects that bore into the wood. The paint is usually brushed on for better coverage and is often reapplied every year to keep the tree protected.

Although trees may display other colors for different reasons—such as orange marks for planned removal or purple markings for property boundaries—the white coating has a much simpler purpose. It is **”purely protective”** and is not meant for decoration or identification.

A white-painted trunk is a sign of thoughtful tree care. By shielding bark from harsh weather and reducing the chance of damage, gardeners help trees stay healthier, stronger, and better able to thrive for years. This simple yearly practice can make a significant difference in preserving a tree’s long-term health and resilience.
