Why Tiny White Larvae Sometimes Appear in Fresh Berries, According to Experts

Finding tiny white larvae inside a strawberry can be unpleasant, but experts say it is usually not a reason to panic. These small larvae can come from the spotted wing drosophila, a fruit fly that can lay eggs inside healthy, ripening fruit while it is still growing. Because the larvae are extremely small and nearly transparent, they can remain unnoticed until a strawberry is cut open or soaked.

Despite how unpleasant it may seem, experts emphasize that these larvae are not considered a significant health risk. Fresh fruits grown outdoors naturally come into contact with insects and other environmental factors, and it is impossible to remove every naturally occurring insect during farming and processing. Growers use pest controls, monitoring, and sorting to reduce the problem, but tiny amounts can occasionally remain.

For extra reassurance, strawberries should be rinsed thoroughly under cool running water before eating. Some people choose to soak them in salt water or diluted vinegar, which may help remove small insects and debris, although this is optional rather than necessary for safety. Washing strawberries immediately before eating is also recommended because excess moisture can make them spoil faster.

Proper storage can help keep strawberries fresh for longer. Refrigerating them slows spoilage, while washing them only when you are ready to eat them helps prevent moisture from building up. Any visibly damaged, moldy, or spoiled berries should simply be discarded rather than eaten.

Although discovering larvae may change the way you look at strawberries, it does not mean the fruit is generally unsafe. Strawberries remain a nutritious source of vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants, and other beneficial nutrients. In most cases, properly washed, fresh strawberries can still be enjoyed safely as part of a balanced diet.
