Why Your Pet “Steals” Your Spot

Many pet owners have walked into a room only to find their dog or cat comfortably occupying the exact place they were sitting. It may look like “bed stealing,” but animal behavior research suggests something deeper is happening. A pet’s sleeping habits are influenced by instinct, comfort, and their relationship with you. By observing where pets sleep, owners can gain insight into their emotional world.

Pets often choose sleep spots based on comfort and temperature. Dogs and cats naturally run warmer than humans, so they frequently move between warm and cool areas to regulate body heat. Soft blankets hold warmth, sunny spots provide natural heat, and cool tile floors help prevent overheating. Cats also tend to prefer higher places because, in the wild, “higher ground meant better visibility — and better safety,” which explains why shelves or cabinets sometimes become favorite resting places.

Security also plays an important role. Sleep is when animals are most vulnerable, so many pets seek locations that feel protected. Dogs often settle under tables, beside beds, or against furniture because these spaces resemble safe, den-like environments. Cats, on the other hand, may hide in boxes, behind furniture, or on high shelves where they can observe their surroundings while staying concealed.

When a pet chooses your spot, it may seem territorial, but experts say it usually reflects trust. Dogs are pack-oriented and feel safe near their owners, and your scent provides comfort. As the article explains, “It’s not a power move. It’s comfort.” Cats also form strong attachments, often sleeping on clothing or pillows because the familiar scent strengthens their sense of security and connection.

Changes in sleeping habits can also reveal clues about a pet’s well-being. Sleeping much more than usual, restlessness at night, or hiding frequently may signal stress, discomfort, or illness. Providing quiet sleeping areas, comfortable bedding, and consistent routines helps pets rest more peacefully.

So the next time your pet curls up in your favorite spot, remember: “They’re choosing warmth. They’re choosing safety. And very often — they’re choosing you.”
