You Cut Open a Watermelon and Saw Cracks? Stop Eating It Immediately! Here’s What It Really Means

Cutting open a watermelon and finding cracks or hollow spaces inside can be surprising. Social media often claims these are signs of dangerous chemicals, but experts say that is usually not true. Internal cracks commonly develop because of uneven watering, sudden growth after dry weather, temperature changes, rough handling, or the fruit becoming overripe. In most cases, these natural imperfections do not make the watermelon unsafe to eat.

One chemical often mentioned is chlorfenuron, a plant growth regulator that may speed up fruit growth and sometimes contribute to hollow centers. This has led many people to worry whenever they see cracks. However, scientists explain that chlorfenuron is used differently around the world. Some countries ban it, while others allow carefully regulated use, creating confusion about whether every cracked watermelon contains harmful chemicals.

Current studies have not found clear evidence that the tiny amounts allowed through approved agricultural use cause serious health problems. Although some animal studies showed harmful effects at very high doses, researchers say those results do not reflect the levels typically found in food. Because questions remain, health authorities continue monitoring the research and applying safety regulations.

Instead of believing internet rumors, shoppers should look for signs of freshness. A good watermelon should feel heavy, have a creamy yellow field spot, a firm rind, and a dry stem. After cutting it open, it should smell fresh, have a crisp texture, and taste sweet. As experts note, **”Small internal cracks alone are usually nothing more than a cosmetic imperfection.”**

If a watermelon has mold, slimy flesh, bad odors, or an unusual taste, throw it away immediately, as spoilage is a much greater concern than approved growth regulators. Choosing and storing watermelon properly allows you to enjoy one of summer’s healthiest and most refreshing fruits with confidence.
